Tips for Keyword Searching:
-
If you are in the beginning stages of your search for new information and want to get the most information possible, limit the number of search fields you use. For example, you may want to only designate a topic and no year. The result will be a broad search that will give you everything in the database for the topic you entered. Once you get the results, you can narrow your search by entering information in one or more of the other search fields.
-
Remember to always search under a variety of topics or terms that may have the same meaning as the topic you have chosen. For example, if you are searching for distance learning entries, think about all of the ways education and training is delivered under the rubric of distance learning. You may search using the terms of distance learning, CD-ROM, DVD, teleconference, videoconference, satellite broadcasts, computer-based programs, independent learning, and so on.
-
Keyword searching may not result in an exhaustive list of programs, grants, or products because often times titles and descriptions do not include the words you might expect to find. Thus, if you are dissatisfied with the results of your keyword search, use all of the search options available for each database. For example, use the keyword search and guided tour for the programs database. For the grants and products databases, use both of those search options plus the SJI special interest grant category search.
